The proto-oncogene c-maf is responsible for tissue-specific expression of interleukin-4
Article Abstract:
The c-maf proto-oncogene is involved in tissue-specific expression of interleukin-4 (IL-4) in CD4+ T helper (Th) 2 cells. The expression of c-Maf occurs only in differentiating and mature Th2 cells and not in Th1 cells. Induction of c-Maf along with IL-4 occurs in Th2 cells on signal transmission through the T cell receptor. Ectopic expression of c-Maf, which transactivates the IL-4 promoter in Th1, nonlymphoid and B cells, maps to the c-Maf response element (MARE) and a region downstream of the MARE.

Transcription factors in lymphocyte development - T and B cells get together
Article Abstract:
Transcription factors controling lineage specification in lymphocyte development are clearly more 'promiscuous' than those who study them. The T and B lineages of the lymphoid system represent leading models for analysis of developmental pathways in mammals and share two key developmental principles: assembly of antigen receptor gene segments using a common recombination mechanism and use of rearranged Ig heavy chain or T cell receptor beta genes to regulate key developmental transitions.

A novel transcription factor, T-bet, directs Th1 lineage commitment
Article Abstract:
The transcription factor T-bet activates Th1 genes and suppresses Th2 genes. Introducing T-bet into Th2 cells converts them to Th1 cells, as shown by the suppression of IL-4 and IL-5 and the production of IFNgamma.
