Two genes, no enzyme: a second look at Barbara McClintock and the 1951 Cold Spring Harbor Symposium
Article Abstract:
A unbiased reanalysis of the 1951 Cold Spring Harbor Symposium could help in replacing the myth surrounding Barbara McClintock's first public presentation of transposable elements, which suggests McClintock was ignored because of her gender. McClintock was one of the better known biologists during her time and her works were highly respected by the time she presented her data on transposable elements. Her findings in that particular field were a pioneering one, but did not receive the kind of recognition it deserved because most of her contemporaries did not understand a word of what she said.

Germinal and somatic activity of the maize element Activator (Ac) in Arabidopsis
Article Abstract:
The transposition activity of the maize Activator (Ac) element in Arabidopsis was studied using the streptomycin assay. Results showed that germinal excision frequency was low but could be increased with an increase in Ac copy number. About 50% of the germinal excision products carried a transposed Ac, suggesting its usefulness as a gene tag. In addition, most of the transformed lines showing no germinal excisions did have an Ac that was active somatically. Germinal transposition events were found to occur premeiotically, resulting in offspring bearing the same transposed Ac element.

Somatic and germinal recombination of a direct repeat in Arabidopsis
Article Abstract:
Homologous recombination of repeated transgenes in Arabidopsis was analyzed by screening for hygromycin resistance, the gene for which was linked to the transfected particle. The rate of germinal recombination was measured at less than two hundred thousandths while that for somatic recombination was placed at greater than one millionth per division. Recombination can take place either by gene conversion or crossing over. A considerable fraction of the recombinants resulted from the integrated action of at least two simple processes independent of each other.
