Unreduced gametes and neopolyploids in natural populations of Achillea borealis (Asteraceae)
Article Abstract:
Gametic nonreduction and neopolyploid formation are investigated in natural tetraploid populations of Achillea borealis (Asteraceae), an autopolyploid complex consisting of tetraploid and hexaploid cytotypes. The results have shown that unreduced eggs are the most likely source of new polyploids and the overall rate of neohexaploid formation is many orders of magnitude greater than estimates of genic mutation rates.

Indirect selection for mutability
Article Abstract:
The mutation-rate evolution is discussed based on female choice. Microsatellites and minisatellites (SSRs) 'slippage' mutation has occurred at rates that are greater than those for single nucleotide substitutions and SSR repeat-number alleles have affected the genetic function from protein coding to exon splicing to regulatory interaction.

The evolving story of oral polio vaccines.
Article Abstract:
The various vaccines developed to detect and treat polio are explained. The proportion and identity of nucleotides present at individual loci and the haplotype of individual viruses would help us to know how the accumulation of mutations leads to the emergence of virulent variants.
