Unusual effect of myo-inositol on phospholipid biosynthesis in Cryptococcus neoformans
Article Abstract:
The localization of the fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans to the central nervous system means a bacterium able to use inositol as its sole source of carbon is in an environment rich in inositol. Cryptococcus neoformans is a fungal pathogen that is present and harmless in the respiratory tract of many healthy people In immunocompromised people, meningoencephalitis can result. The capacity to use inositol has been used to identify cryptococcal infections. Inositol a precursor of phosphatidylinositol. Cryptococcus neoformans has three inositol-containing sphingolipids.

Identification of Haemophilus influenzae Rd transformation genes using cassette mutagenesis
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze genes needed for the natural transformation of Haemophilus influenzae Rd using a cassette mutagenesis protocol. The protocol integrated a number of steps. These include phenotypic screening, random insertional mutagenesis and sequencing of genome sequence tags from DNA. Results indicated the need for type IV pilin-like proteins in the genetic transformation of H. influenzae.
