Urokinase production by embryonic endocardial-derived cells: regulation by substrate composition
Article Abstract:
The function of the extracellular serine protein urokinase in cell migration and tissue remodelling events in cardiovascular morphogenesis is investigated. It was found that the composition of the matrix to which isolated endocardial-derived cells were exposed affected their urokinase production. A three-fold increase in urokinase production was induced by interaction with a 45-kDa gelatin-binding fragment of fibronectin, resulting to increased cell motility and spreading.

Addition of purified basal lamina molecules enables Schwann cell ensheathment of sympathetic neurites in culture
Article Abstract:
A study of nonmyelinating Schwann cell morphology indicates that excessive accumulation of exogenous basal lamina components and enhanced neurite ensheathment, both caused by induction of type IV collagen, laminin and heparen sulfate proteoglycan separately or in combination, affect Schwann cell differentiation. Extreme ensheathment causes the Schwann cells to become hypertrophic, implying the influence of extracellular matrix on the in vivo conformation of these cells.

Upregulation of the 72-kDa type IV collagenase in epithelial and stromal cells during rat tracheal gland morphogenesis
Article Abstract:
The 72-kDa type IV collagenase known as matrix metalloproteinase-2 is activated during tracheal gland morphogenesis in the rat. It is also involved in the degradation of the extracellular matrix. The rise in enzyme functioning is controlled at steady-state mRNA levels in the gland cells and the neighboring stromal cells. This reflects the enzyme's activity at the stages of epithelial growth or remodeling.
