Comparison of methods for detection and enumeration of airborne microorganisms collected by liquid impingement
Article Abstract:
The acridine orange direct count overestimates the number of airborne Pseudomomas fluorescens cells collected in an AGI-30 impinger while the Aerosizer spectrometer and BacLight (BL) live count underestimate the number of bacteria. The BL live count does not consider the cells injured during collection into the impinger. However, most injured cells recover after collection. The collection rate during 60 min of impingement remains constant. The plate count and BL methods give a similar count of nonviable cells.

Natural occurence of the C series of fumonisins in moldy corn
Article Abstract:
High-performance liquid chromatography was used in analyzing 44 moldy corn samples for the presence of the B and C series of fumonisins. The latter are mycotoxins found in corn and corn-based products. Fumonisin-contaminated corn causes leukoencephalomalacia in horses, pulmonary edema in swine and human esophageal cancer in South Africa and China. Thirty-two samples were found to be contaminated with the B and C fumonisins while six were infected with the B series only.

Aerosolization of particulate (1->3)-[beta]-D-glucan from moldy materials
Article Abstract:
The release of particular (1->3)-[beta]-D-glucan from the surface of artificially mold-contaminated materials is characterized. The results have shown that the aerosolization of particulate (1->3)-[beta]-D-glucan is affected mainly by the type of material and the fungal species.
