Lactic acid permeabilizes gram-negative bacteria by disrupting the outer membrane
Article Abstract:
Lactic acid causes gram-negative bacteria to become permeable by disrupting the outer membrane. It may serve as a natural antimicrobial. It has been studied using a fluorescent-probe uptake assay and sensitization to bacteriolysis. The acid may act as a potentiator of effects of other antimicrobial substances.

Weakening effect of cell pearmeabilizers on gram-negative bacteria causing biodeterioration
Article Abstract:
An investigation and characterization of the effect of potential permeabilizers was conducted on the outer membrane (OM) properties of gram-negative bacteria causing biodeterioration. The control of growth of gram-negative bacteria provides a way to reduce biodeterioration of stone materials.

The outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria inhibits antibacterial activity of brochocin-C
Article Abstract:
To determine whether the antibacterial activity of brochocin-C is equivalent to that of nisin against gram-negative bacteria, the outer membrane was studied to see whether it constitutes a barrier to brochocin-C. The effect of brochocin C on release of ATP from cells and spheroplasts of gram-negative bacteria was also considered. Brochocin-C is a broad-spectrum two-peptide bactericin produced by Brochothrix campestris ATCC 43754.
