A bountiful grab bag of programs
Article Abstract:
Walnut Creek CD ROM's $30 CICA and $40 The Scientific and Technician CD-ROM, Second Edition are collections of programs that provide an overwhelming number of utilities for the advanced user. CICA includes 3,062 general and technical applications, with the former including desktop applications, games, fonts, icons, utilities and sounds. The technical applications include folders for drivers, patches, programs, Access and Excel, among others. The programs are almost all shareware and operate on the honor system, so that users who decide to install the applications permanently should pay the programs' authors the stipulated fee, typically $20 to $30. For the fee, users may receive a manual, updates or the ability to discuss the program with the author. The Scientific and Technical Library includes 2,000 programs for use in the fields of artificial intelligence, programming engineering, electronics, technical drawing and medicine, among others.

Child's play is no longer just a simple proposition
Article Abstract:
Computer software for children often has greater memory requirements than software for older users because it includes thousands of colors, sound and advanced features. A book called "Kidware: the Parent's Guide to Software for Children" by Michael Perkins and Celia Nunez tells parents the basics to buying software and also gives information on 100 children's software titles. The titles are divided by age group and are primarily educational packages. Another book for users is "1,001 Komputer Answers from Kim Komando" and is available both in hard copy and as a CD-ROM reference disk. The CD-ROM is helpful because it is much easier to search than the book and includes helpful instruction about a variety of computer-related topics. "Living at Light Speed: Your Survival Guide to Life on the Information Superhighway" by Danny Goodman is a humor book that discusses the myths of technology.
