Apple to announce key moves Monday including possible Oracle collaboration
Article Abstract:
Apple's acting CEO, Steve Jobs, is expected to announce a collaboration with Oracle in an attempt to reestablish its product-development momentum. The anticipated collaboration would involve the development of stripped-down network computers. Jobs is also expected to outline the company's new direction and introduce new high- and mid-range models of the Macintosh computer line. The new models will be based on Apple's powerful new chip, the PowerPC 750. Apple will also be introducing a highly sophisticated PowerBook laptop, which consumes less power and has higher speeds than comparable chips from Intel. Jobs has only confirmed that he has a meaningful announcement to make. He continues to insist that he will not be taking the permanent CEO position and claims the search has been narrowed down to two unidentified computer-industry executives.

AST confirms it is talking with Samsung
Article Abstract:
AST Research is engaged in talks with Samsung Electronics about the possibility of selling a minority stake in the company, which has recently experienced several quarters of poor financial results. Reports from trade presses say that Samsung would like to acquire 20% of AST but terms of any deal were not disclosed. AST failed to deliver new products on time, was forced to rely on older product lines and experienced a loss of $62.2 million in the first fiscal half of 1994. The divesting of a 20% stake in the company would infuse AST with a needed source of capital. Analysts say that the company is big enough to survive the financial troubles but that the investment from Samsung would be very helpful. The deal with Samsung would also give AST improved access to personal computer components, including memory processors.

Apple's Amelio wants to take firm beyond desktop into profitable arenas
Article Abstract:
Apple CEO Gilbert F. Amelio announces his intention to expand the company's developmental and marketing focus in order to decrease its reliance on the extremely competitive desktop computer market. In a well-received address to approximately 2,000 of Apple's employees, Amelio stopped short of detailing the specific route that Apple will take in order to regain profitability. However, Amelio did emphasize the importance of the technology behind the company's Newton handheld device and the Pippin information appliance, noting that these products may find greater acceptance as Internet usage increases. Apple is expected to increase the development activity for its line of network servers, a portion of the computer market that offers significantly better profit margins than desktop systems.
