A hard look at workplace trouble
Article Abstract:
Managers are more likely to be the cause of workplace disputes than are employees or union behavior, according to a study of industrial disputes. In 1998, 290 disputes were due to managerial policy, while 57 were a result of union behavior. Terms of employment; personal disagreements; and production quotas are included as managerial policy. Paradoxically, the survey also showed that it is more difficult to hold managers than employees accountable for disputes. Effective employee-manager communication can make unions almost irrelevant.
