A sickly Vanguard Air gets tough under military man; retired admiral changes tack and cracks the whip to produce a string of profits
Article Abstract:
There have been casualties among the small start-up airlines, such as Air South and Western Pacific, but Kansas City-based Vanguard Airlines has been sticking to its plan and it plans to show a profit. Only four years young, its former admiral now CEO is making investors happy and that's what counts to Wall Street. Robert J. "Rocky" Spane has been called an outstanding performer even though his background had been in the navy, not in business. His experience with airplanes, maintenance, logistics and manpower have put the company back in the black, at least for now.

Led by Northwest, airlines raise leisure fares
Article Abstract:
The price of most major carriers' leisure fares rose throughout the US as a result of Northwest Airlines' 4% increase in its fares. Northwest's rate increase came as a surprise in the airline industry among the flying public. The carrier's move comes just 12 days before a possible pilots' union strike in August 1998. Northwest's major rivals had been trying to raise ticket prices between January 1998 and August 1998.
