A tax to give us all consumption
Article Abstract:
The introduction of Australia's goods and services tax (GST) will not be smooth and may take more than 10,000 amendments to make the legislation workable, as the government has hidden some aspects of the GST from taxpayers. The GST could create tax on tax and double taxation on leased company vehicles. Also, the legislation could give discretionary anti-avoidance powers to the Australian Tax Office. Businesses using the accrual accounting system may have liability for GST on their bad debts.
