Australian Phillip Merrick and his American wife Caren De Witt established webMethods, a company which helps internet business-to-business deals by letting computers with different software communicate, in 1996. Family, friends and "business angel" Robert Cook lent money to help develop the company and Robert Cook came to the rescue again with a loan of $200,000 when the company almost ran out of money.
