Health and happiness in the grey years
Article Abstract:
The societal aspects of health care for older Australians need to be addressed as people are living longer. There are 2.2 million Australians aged 65 and over; by 2019, that number will double. Aging issues extend beyond the need for health care to work, recreation, and transportation. The United Nations designated 1999 as the International Year of the Older Persons, but the Australian government's commitment to this initiative is not clear.

Science and social responsibility
Article Abstract:
The scientific community and the government must work together in a spirit of social cooperation to ensure public health and safety. Scientists should be obligated to communicate, educate, and be socially responsible in return for the commitment of politicians to provide support and research investment. The government must also do its part by monitoring scientific activities and responding to the public about health concerns.
