Article Abstract:
The defense industry will continue to consolidate because of declining orders since the end of the Cold War. The aerospace industry illustrates the declining number of manufacturers, with only three large companies remaining: Boeing Co., Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. However, in Europe more mergers may be needed to make aircraft builders competitive.

Defense spending, especially for Lockheed Martin's Joint Strike Fighter and Boeing's C-17, is expected to increase in the fiscal year 2002. However, there has been a decline in demand for commercial jet aircraft. Investors need to concentrate on the most timely stocks in this sector.
