Ailing steel industry launches a battle against imports

The steel industry in the US filed a series of trade complaints against competitors overseas as several American steel firms continue to struggle. One steel company has declared bankruptcy, while others have ended mill operations. Most steel companies are expected to see serious reductions in their earnings. US steel firms are battling the wave of steel imports from overseas. The industry filed its claims with the US Department of Commerce and the US International Trade Commission.

Bethlehem Steel to close mills, cut 540 jobs
Article Abstract:
Bethlehem Steel Corp. will stop production at two stainless steel sheet and strip plants by March 31, one in Massillon, Ohio, the other in Washington, PA. The two mills have been for sale since the acquisition of Lukens Inc. The company is selling another stainless operation to Ryerson Tull Inc. for $70 million, also part of the Lukens acquisition. The closings will result in 540 employees being put out of work.
