Amazon.com purchases signal wider ambitions
Article Abstract:
Amazon.com purchased PlanetAll for about $90 million. PlanetAll will give Amazon.com access to 1.5 million people who organize their calenders and addresses on the Internet. Amazon.com also purchased Junglee Corp. for $180 million. The Junglee Corp. will make Amazon.com the owner of a search engine that allows on-line comparison shopping for everything from jeans to music and computer modems. Both acquisitions are being financed with Amazon stock. "This is a great chance for Amazon to become a destination site for a broad array of goods, whether they sell them or not," said Genne Combes, an analyst at Hambrecht & Quist Inc.
