Anatomy of a turnaround
Article Abstract:
General Marble staged a successful turnaround after its management realized that low-quality customer service, increasing inventories and inaccurate inventory audits are weakening the position of the company in its industry. Recognizing the need for an external change agent, management hired Coopers and Lybrand Consulting (CLC) to help in the formulation of an operations improvement plan. CLC introduced its Breakpoint Business Process Reengineering Methodology to determine how reengineering should be implemented in the bathroom countertop and vanity manufacturer. With the help of CLC, management formed teams to deal with general ledger consolidation and financial reporting; manufacturing systems; layout, methods, and pull signals; procurement; and total quality management. As a result, General Marble is profitable once again and is continuously improving its processes.

Contemporary furniture makers Christopher Connel and Raoul C. Hogg formed MAP, Merchants of Australian Products, with the financial help of three venture capitalists.
