Sun Microsystems cuts jobs as sales fall
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems Inc. announced a 43% drop in fiscal first-quarter sales and said it will lay off about 3,900 employees, 9% of its work force. Sun anticipates revenue for the fiscal first quarter of $2.7 billion and $2.9 billion, as compared with $5.04 in the same period a year earlier. As the Internet boom has faltered, failed dot-com firms have begun selling unneeded Sun machines in so-called gray-market sales, which has further hurt demand and pricing for new Sun machines.

Sun Microsystems plans big push on Web services
Article Abstract:
Sun Microsystems Inc. plans a new print advertising campaign to announce its slate of Web services. The company, competing with Microsoft Corp., will offer new ways to automate tasks using the Internet. Unlike Microsoft, Sun is not 'locking' customers in to using its own software exclusively, and Sun is not operating its own Web services as Microsoft is doing via its Microsoft.NET startegy. Sun will introduce new software programs, or building-blocks, to its Web services and its own new instant-messaging technology.
