Article Abstract:
The largest US banks have been lured by long-term prospects into the emerging nations market in the 1990s. However, the economic turmoil of Southeast Asia in 1997 may cause earnings growth to slow. Earnings may be slowed, also, by slower revenue generation and the costs of bank mergers and acquisitions in the 1990s, and other operating expenses. Investors need to be selective with these stocks before committing funds.

Article Abstract:
Banks are expected to have excellent earnings potential throughout 1997 because of lower operating expense-to-revenue ratios and stock repurchase programs. Investing in banks with good niche markets and increasing fee-income avenues will prove economically sound. Credit quality problems are not expected to be an issue during 1997.
