Banks Getting Fancy with Index Trading

Boston's State Street Bank and Trust Company has been labeled as having the most sophisticated strategies for handling their pooled funds of any bank in the country. The bank being one of the largest custodian banks in the world, has close to $120 billion in securities in its care. The asset management team has set up two pool funds. One fund is designed to perform the same as the Standard and Poor 500 Index. The goal of the other pool is to outperform the Standard and Poor 500 by using a strategy called 'cash-futures swap'. State Bank provides master trust services to such major pension funds as International Business Machines, Exxon, and American Telephone and Telegraph.

Savings and loan associations have, in the past found themselves heavily burdened with regulations. Now they find that they are almost deregulated, which is allowing them to become more diversified and creative in the management of their assets and liabilities. Many savings and loans are still encumbered with regulated loans made years ago, which cause their liabilities to be greater than their assets. This imbalance between assets and liabilities is called a gap. Savings and loans are constantly struggling to close this gap. Many have moved to using futures, options, hedging and other creative investment forms which in the past were untouchable to them.
