Managing in the front line: the changing role of supervisors
Article Abstract:
Technical developments and increasingly sophisticated production methods have redefined the role of the supervisor. The supervisor's role has changed from direct control over workers to one of wider management, including: motivating workers; making industrial relations decisions; and interacting with support units in the competition for resources. Skills now critical to the role of supervisor include: assertiveness; motivation; and the perception of formal and informal relationships. The training of supervisors at present is too theoretical and does not take into account the changing nature of the supervisor's role and the increasingly well-educated employees to be supervised. Role analysis is necessary for the redefinition of: training; selection; and the reward system.

In view of the fact that severe skill shortages are going to become more acute in the near future, the importance of developing flexible employment practices has become critical. Topics discussed include: single status job classifications, employee commitment, and unfair dismissal laws.
