Bell Atlantic to install system for mobile computer market
Article Abstract:
Bell Atlantic Corp installs a wireless data transmission system developed by Cellular Data Inc that enables mobile portable computer users to communicate over a cellular network without interfering with voice channels. The piggyback data network does not reduce the capacity for regular voice communications, and it is less expensive for the consumer than dial-up cellular service. Wireless communications are especially useful for trucking and delivery companies because drivers are able to communicate directly with their managers regarding their location and freight. The Cellular Data equipment will be placed in 25 to 30 cell sites in the Baltimore, MD, metropolitan area, and a commercial service will be available by Mar 1993.

Bell Atlantic picks newer technology in cellular rivalry
Article Abstract:
Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems, the regional Bell's cellular telephone unit, has decided to purchase equipment that uses Code Division Multiple Access digital technology. Two other regional Bells, U S West Inc and Pacific Telesis Group's PacTel Cellular division, adopted CDMA technology in 1992. So far, Southwestern Bell Corp is the only one of the original Bells to have chosen TDMA, an older digital technology. McCaw Cellular Communications Inc has also adopted TDMA. CDMA and TDMA digitize cellular transmission signals in different manners. Digital transmission will provide cellular users with better sound and improved security, but some in the industry fear that the competing standards will confuse customers.
