Bottle babies take on the glass goliath
Article Abstract:
Only one company has challenged the only glass manufacturer in Australia, ACI, during the 20th century. Smorgon's Glass Containers operated from 1971 to 1991 until ACI acquired it. Philippine-based San Miguel Corp. had planned to build a bottle plant in 1998 but decided against it. Winemakers Glass Corp., a new company in Australia, states it will open a plant. Wine bottles cost 30% to 100% more in Australia than overseas.
