CD-ROMs worth having about three things in life worth having
Article Abstract:
Creative Multimedia's $30 Dr. Ruth's Encyclopedia of Sex, StarPress Multimedia's $40 Material World and Virtual Entertainment's $20 Multimedia IQ Test CD-ROM titles address sex, material goods and intelligence, life's most important subjects. Dr. Ruth's Encyclopedia of Sex is hosted by famous sex educator Dr Ruth Westheimer. The CD-ROM is available for PCs running Windows. It includes a huge variety of information about hygiene, health, sex education and safe sex. It even includes common questions and answers, and a sex quiz. The CD-ROM is not pornographic, but clinical in tone. A password lock-out feature insures that children will not be able to access the information without permission. StarPress' Material World CD-ROM is available on both Macintosh and Windows. It is an interesting photographic exhibition of the worldly possessions of 30 families from all over the world. Virtual Entertainment's Multimedia IQ Test is available on Windows and Macintosh. It features a real IQ test, and statistical tools to analyse scores.

Programs that help with college picks only get a 'B.' (Creative Multimedia's US News Getting Into College, Kaplan Interactive's On Campus 96 and McCabe Software's CollegeWhere)(Personal Technology) (Software Review)(Evaluation)(Column)
Article Abstract:
There are several software packages available that promise to help students select a college. Creative Multimedia's $30 US News Getting Into College software offers an outstanding combination of excellent search functions and useful advice for selecting a college. The CD-ROM is built around a powerful search function that is also easy to use. Users can search from thousands of colleges based on criteria such as majors, size, location and activities. The application's profiles of each college are extremely well-written and are the most complete of any college search application. The program does not offer a 'save list' function and it does not include a common application form. McCabe Software's $50 CollegeWhere CD-ROM includes a strong search engine, but its confusing interface makes it less impressive than the US News program. The program provides little more than basic searching and matching. A rich list of criteria is offered among several modules.

Good news for you: Web, online services are all tangled up
Article Abstract:
The inter-connected relationship between the Web and online services such as America Online (AOL) is often minimized in many technical discussions of the two technologies. However, the differences are not as stark or restrictive as many users have been led to believe. Both the Web and AOL provide access to information, but services and pricing schemes differ marginally. AOL subscribers gain access to controlled, aggregated content, such as chat rooms and e-mail services, and are provided with a Web browser when searching for Web sites that lie beyond the service's domain. Web users can access the Web through Internet service providers but must provide for their own Web browsers and are not offered the content or guiding services that AOL users receive. Both communications environments provide similar features, and their inter-relation is likely to increase with time.
