Can Economy Reelect Legislators?
Article Abstract:
The effect of the 1984 election year on deficit legislation is evaluated. A deficit compromise is predicted prior to the election. While the deficit and conservative spending cuts are Reagan failures, inflation and unemployment reductions are favorable. Previous studies suggest little correlation between economic performance and reelection success.

Historically, economic recoveries span five months. Consumer spending and inventory stockpiling drops and sustains at a slower pace after that time period. Changes in gross national product (GNP), retail sales, unemployment, industrial production and prices are listed from 1974 to 1984. Business indicators are compared from 1983 and early 1984.

With the increased economic growth in the United States economists are concerned over the possibility of the government tightening its monetary policy. Unemployment has dropped and there has been an increase in capital goods. Both are good signs. The mood of the economy is included.
