Chemical (basic) industry
Article Abstract:
The market for the basic chemical industry is expected to contract in 1999 due to high inventory levels, reduced product demand, and low commodity prices. The sharp increase in the value of the American dollar also poses a problem for the industry as about 18% of the chemicals produced in the US are exported, and industry profits may also be hurt by an economic slowdown in 1999. However, cautious investors with at least a two-year horizon could find some valuable stocks in this industry.

Chemical (basic) industry
Article Abstract:
Stocks of the basic chemical industry have fallen, and earnings for the 3d qtr 1998 are expected to be about 15% lower than the same period in 1997. Nevertheless, lower stock prices may make the stocks a good investment in the long term. Polymer manufacturers such as Dow Chemical, DuPont and Union Carbide are recommended as strong diversified companies able to weather cyclical changes.
