Chip-equipment makers' gathering won't be a picnic; forecast from Applied Materials reflects worst industry slump since 1980s
Article Abstract:
The semiconductor-manufacturing equipment industry's slump is leading some people to question whether established companies will survive. The second downturn includes several new developments when compared to the mid-1980s crisis. More production companies and international manufacturing capacity have created a glut of chip supplies while sinking memory prices. Chip makers have responded by reducing new factory construction and equipment purchases. The sudden bust has prompted companies to lay off thousands of employees since Jan 1998, while some have eliminated employee rewards. The cutbacks coincide with research for an estimated $15 billion chip industry factory overhaul. Delays also are taking place in the shift to larger 12-inch silicon wafers despite companies's investments of $25 million to $50 million in equipment development. Some 70,000 industry people will commiserate at an annual convention in San Francisco in mid-Jul 1998.
