Chrysler net jumps 55%, beating forecasts
Article Abstract:
Chrysler Corp. reported higher-than-expected earnings for the third-quarter of 1998. The report will probably be Chrysler's last as an independent firm. The car maker announced an increase of almost 55% in its net income to $682 million. The figures were helped by strong sales and ongoing cost reduction. Chrysler, the number three auto maker in the US, is expecting to complete its merger with Daimler-Benz AG in the middle of November 1998.

UAW strikes key GM plant in Flint, Mich
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp. may have a summer of discontent if a UAW strike at an important parts factory is an omen of things to come. The current dispute at a Flint, MI-metals stamping plant, involves job security and productivity. A second parts plant is presently threatened by strike. A renewal of labor wars seems clear by the immediate issuance of strongly-worded statements by both sides.
