Cleaning up? Proceed with caution
Article Abstract:
Efforts to reorganize a computer hard drive can cause some unforeseen problems for Windows 98 users. The Disk Cleanup tool can open space by emptying a Recycle Bin and deleting extraneous Web pages and other files. Disk Defragmenter can prioritize the most popular programs for faster access, as well as eliminate other obsolete programs. Users then could be blocked from sending E-mail messages over Eudora, as changing the programs may prevent Eudora from locating a key file in the Windows System folder. Owners may inadvertently eliminate code which allows the OS to run common functions shared by numerous programs. Missing files can be retrieved by copying them from another computer onto a floppy and transferring them to the original computer, but only with the correct formatting. Users can avoid problems by not eliminating duplicate versions in the Windows Systems folder, sending duplicates to the Recycle Bin for a few days before deleting and inspect a file's contents before deleting, according to Dupeless.

10,000 jobs must be cut, Seagate says; bulk of layoffs in Asia; pricing pressure is cited
Article Abstract:
Seagate Technology announced that it would lay off approximately 10,000 workers due to increased competition and a slowing market. A spokeswoman for the world's largest PC disk drive maker said 1,350 job reductions would take place in the US, compared to 1,120 in Europe and around 7,530 in Asia. The majority of US layoffs will occur in California, Minnesota and Oklahoma. Most of the European cuts will take place in Ireland, while Seagate will focus Asian reductions in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Seagate did not disclose its anticipated savings from the job reductions, saying it would discuss the financial details upon release of its latest quarterly financial results on Jan 20, 1998. Seagate announced in early Jan 1998 that it would absorb $250 million in charges for the 2nd qtr 1998, ended Dec 1997, to streamline its operations.

Microsoft issues pink slips to most 3.5-inch floppies
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's layoff of 120 floppy-disk manufacturing employees is indicative of the declining industry support for the 1.44MB, 3.5-inch storage medium. Microsoft officials expect to phase out its reliance and support for 3.5-inch floppy disks, as the computer industry produces increasingly advanced storage alternatives. Companies that specialize in the mass-copying of computer disks for software vendors, as well as its packaging and assembly, will be forced to alter and enhance their production capabilities. The growing use of CD-ROM drives and a networking architecture that obviates the need for multiple copies of shrink-wrapped software are hastening the demise of the standard hard disk drive and the floppy disks used with it.
