Computing through a glass darkly
Article Abstract:
The dim screens and small keyboards of the hand-held computers currently available make these products too difficult to use comfortably. Several computer companies, such as Compaq, Hitachi and Casio, are releasing hand-held PCs, which all use Microsoft's Windows CE OS. Reading the print on the small screens is not improved by the dim backlights included in many of the models. The hand-held PCs usually have pointing devices to alleviate some of the difficulties of using the small keyboards, but they are no easier to manipulate than the keys. Casio's Cassiopeia desktop software includes a version of Schedule Plus that allows synchronizing between calendars in a desktop and hand-held PC. The Cassiopeia can signal calendar events audibly and through an LED. Although the software also converts files to and from a desktop and a hand-held PC, it does not support drag-and-drop features or much of the original formatting.

Handling the 'out of box experience.' (Personal Computers) (Technology Tutorial)(Column)
Article Abstract:
Installation of new computers requires careful planning. Users will need to create sufficient room for the PC and peripherals, as well as electrical considerations. Ergonomics plays a key role, as using a comfortable chair and placing the monitor at eye level will reduce the chances of injury. Separate purchases of an IEEE-1284 bidirectional parallel cable and several extra printer cartridges can prepare for printer manufacturer omissions. It is important for users to follow documentation recommendations on the proper sequence for connecting the computer and peripherals. Some products, such as Windows, ask users to complete information that can include a serial number or computer clock. Manuals provide little or no help because of the difficulty in differentiating among models, product lines and other options. An unconditional money-back guarantee is essential, and users need to test every relevant feature.
