Conquering new territories in transportation technology
Article Abstract:
Viking Freight Inc. is seriously committed to the successful implementation of transportation technology in the trucking industry. It launched a comprehensive program known as the PRISM project in 1993 with the aim of creating an extensive model that would unite all its divisions across the country and enable the company and its customers to exploit transportation technologies in the future. Unlike other companies, Viking develops systems to satisfy existing and expected customer requirements and designs them in conjunction with processes to generate a specific business solution. It was one of the pioneering transportation firms to offer customers with electronic data interchange and other freight management services. It also was the first less-than-truckload trucker to provide drivers with the ability to directly monitor freight information into a personal computer through its introduction of EZtrac.

Controllers lead technology innovations
Article Abstract:
Results of the latest Information Technology Survey administered by the Controllers Council of the Institute of Management Accountants showed that controllers are spearheading implementation of technological innovations in most companies. Respondents answered that the introduction of these new technologies in their companies is aimed at improving their global competitiveness. Investment in management information systems is allocated to mainframe computers (33%), stand-alone personal computers (31%) and software (25%). The controllers reported problems in the implementation of client/server technology. These are the lack of preparedness for the impact of new technology, excessive dependency on external consultants and lack of senior management commitment. These findings are included in the Controllers Council 1995 2nd Quarter Economic Outlook Survey.

Developing your technology skills
Article Abstract:
Accountants would benefit from participating in projects involving advanced technologies and improving their technical skills, given that technology is playing an ever increasing role in the workplace. Accounting professionals can build their technical knowledge by taking computer or software classes, attending software package vendor courses, taking advantage of seminars and articles on technology topics offered by associations, surfing the Internet, read trade journals, and establishing ties with the company's internal information technology staff. Accountants can also improve their skills by participating in technology-related projects, such as a systems conversion. They can convince management to allow them to join even though they are only marginally knowledgeable by demonstrating their initiative and potential to contribute to the project.
