Conrades of IBM, demoted last fall, says he'll retire
Article Abstract:
IBM Senior VP George Conrades, who was once thought to be one of two candidates to become the next IBM chairman, will retire from his position within the week ending Feb 29, 1992. A sharp marketing strategist who was once known for having turned around IBM's Asian operations, Conrades in the late 1980s became seen as one of the parties responsible for the firm's financial downturn. In Nov 1991, Conrades was removed from his position as general manager of IBM's US operations and demoted to a marketing position with limited resources. Outsiders saw the move by IBM Chmn John Akers as an indication to IBM employees that all personnel, including top management, were liable to lose their jobs if the company's finances did not improve. Conrades says he is retiring because he wishes to take time to evaluate job offers that he has received.

IBM wants its managers to encourage certain workers to leave the company
Article Abstract:
IBM initiates a program internally that will let managers encourage employees to leave the company. A spokesman for IBM says that employees will not be forced to leave, which means that IBM intends to continue in its 'no-layoff' tradition. IBM values the tradition for reasons of company morale. Nevertheless, some IBM employees say that IBM is coming close to layoffs, with increased firings and increased pressure on weak performers. Morale, some say, is already down. Under IBM's new employee reduction program, managers will be allowed to choose employees who do not fit in, for whatever reason. IBM managers will apply various pressures and will tell marginal employees that if they stay, they may eventually face pay cuts or be fired.
