Corning Inc. has a 40% share of the global fiber optic market. Lucent Technologies is second, with 20%. Experts see data transmission costs dropping to 1% of today's prices by decade's end. They also predict a 17-fold increase in global network capacity within 4 years. Besides fiber optic cable, Corning is producing photonics, equipment which manipulates the optical signal. Kitchenware has shrunk from accounting for 80% of the firm's sales 4 years ago, to 40% in 1999.

Rubbermaid is on a tear, sweeping away the cobwebs

Rubbermaid Inc. announced restructuring plans in January, 1998 aimed at saving $200 million by the end of the year 2000. The company has shed three businesses, started shifting production to cheaper locations and launched a $50 million television advertising campaign. Rubbermaid's board approved more changes two weeks ago which include changing global manufacturing operations and investing heavily in robotics. It will also be closing factories and expanding some of its key distribution facilities. The company has also stepped up consumer research. Changes in the retail industry, such as price reductions and growing competition, has forced Rubbermaid to reduce costs.

The company also doesn't aspire to be a global leader. It is placing its focus on strategic alliances rather than mergers and acquisitions, with the plan being to remain independent. Cooper sees its recent alliance with Pirelli Tyres of Italy as a smart move, giving it a partner with an understanding of the "the rest of the world" without investing any big money.
