Crackdown on trusts still a tax-reform aim

The Howard government in Australia looks set to go ahead with its unpopular plans for treating tax trusts like companies. Draft legislation could be prepared by June 2002 and come into force soon after despite widespread opposition.

The Australian Taxation Office approved new rules relating to charities in April 2001. The rules mean individuals and others can set up charitable foundations allowing greater secrecy and aims to encourage more giving.
