Control Data to write off $210 million; fourth-period charge, tied to shedding of lines, finishes restructuring
Article Abstract:
Control Data Corp will take a $210 million write-off in the 4th qtr, as the company leaves unprofitable businesses and completes a five-year restructuring. Annual results reflect more than $650 million in restructuring costs, or about half the $1.4 billion write-off the company has run up since its struggle for survival began in 1984. Lawrence Perlman, Pres and CEO of Control Data, says he foresees no further restructurings. He predicts that all of Control Data's businesses will be profitable in the quarter just ended.

Cray Research rolls out new generation of supercomputers aimed at entry-level
Article Abstract:
Cray Research Inc's Y-MP2E is an entry-level supercomputer that sells for $2.2 million. The new product contains the same processing and memory technology and runs at the same six nanosecond cycle speed as other members of the Y family, but these smaller machines do not need cumbersome cooling 'plumbing' that earlier versions required. The new supercomputers can be either air-cooled or water-cooled, and they will fit into current computer-room environments. Shipments are expected to begin in Aug or Sep 1990.
