Developing Hungarian managers
Article Abstract:
Buckinghamshire Business School researched the effectiveness of its management training programmes for Hungarian business managers, launched in 1990. The extensive inauguration of management training courses in ex-communist countries was a response to the need for companies to re-orient their businesses towards the free market environment. The School found that management behaviour was beginning to change in Hungary, but that progress is slow. The managers are struggling to internalize the new management concepts and to apply them in the context of the Hungarian economy.

Varietousness
Article Abstract:
Students attending the week-long residential course which marks the beginning of the Diploma in Management Studies at the University of Central England Business School developed the concept of varietousness. This concept conveys optimism and action, indicating that there are benefits to be derived from managing constraints in an organized way. Within this framework, students discussed issues including the management of change and the ability to exercise flexible management within an environment of material constraints.

In search of a satisfactory sufficiency: the origin of Herbert Simon's term 'satisficing'
Article Abstract:
Herbert Simon is best known for his coining of the term 'satisficing', a cross between 'satisfying' and 'sufficing', when applied to decision-making and administrative behaviour. An exploration of the events that led Simon to his idea that administrators proceed by satisficing rather than through maximising is presented.
