Diabetes study supports drug therapy
Article Abstract:
Antidiabetic drug therapy reduces complications better than diet restrictions alone, a British study of nearly 4000 adult diabetics shows. However, insulin and related drugs were no more effective than diet in reducing deaths from diabetic complications. Insulin-maker Eli Lilly and Co and Glucophage-producer Bristol-Meyers Squibb Co are expected to benefit from the study's publication. Part of the study seemed to show that metformin or Glucophage was the most effective drug in reducing complications, but Saul Genuth of the American Diabetes Association questioned that finding.
