Digital, Sun and Xerox to make better printer link
Article Abstract:
Xerox, SunSoft and DEC plan to develop printer software that will allow different computing and printing platforms to interoperate. Printxchange will work with machines running on Unix and would be embedded in PCs or printers. The coalition is developing the software in response to the frustration of users in a distributed computing environment who cannot tell when a computer is busy, out of paper or not working. Surveys conducted by consultants reveal that printing problems are the primary complaint of systems administrators. Printxchange would server as the basis for generating a status report as soon as a file is sent to a printer. The software would also forward a document if one printer were busy or offline and would be able to report job cost and charge it to a department. Within Printxchange, one module will begin print requests, another will hold the information to be printed and a third will manage the printers. It will be available in mid-1996.

9,000 job cuts to save Xerox $1 billion
Article Abstract:
Xerox said it would slash around 9,000 jobs, or almost 10% of its workforce, by 2000 or 2001 as part of a plan to save $1 billion annually. Approximately 50% of the reductions will take place in the US, including about 1,400 cuts in Rochester, NY. Another Xerox strategy calls for consolidating European support functions such as accounting and service. Xerox Pres G. Richard Thoman expected the company to allocate at least 50% of the savings toward boosting sales and marketing. Companies seeking double-digit sales growth must rely on flexible pricing and advertising, Thoman said. Xerox's sales and general administration ranks will absorb the vast majority of the cuts, in a company effort to lower its expenses in these areas from 28.8% in 1997 to the low 20s over time. A continued effort to sell lower-priced, lower-margin products through retail outlets has pitted Xerox against more efficient competitors like HP.

Sugarcoated practice for the SAT and ACT
Article Abstract:
Test-preparation software can help students improve their scores on the standardized SAT and ACT Assessment examinations. An example is Princeton Review's Inside the SAT, which one high-school student said helped raise her SAT math score by the equivalent of 120 points. Other available titles include the Princeton Review's Inside the ACT, Kaplan's entertaining Higher Score on the SAT and ACT, and the Learning Company's straightforward Score Builder for the SAT and ACT. Each of these products permits students to identify problem areas, manage time and learn difficult techniques.
