Don't waste money on management development
Article Abstract:
Many managers have reservations about the way in which management development (MD) is practised and managed in their company, even though many companies now place strong emphasis on MD. Managers feel that MD has fallen victim to poor management practice, even though it has the potential to have a positive impact on management practice. Research on this issue indicates that MD professionals are regarded as undertaking administrative, non-strategic roles. It is now time for companies to encourage a more positive view of MD, emphasizing that MD investments can have positive results.

A competent experience?
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of a development programme for nurse managers introduced in 1992 by the management development head of a hospital in north England has revealed that the participants derived several benefits. The programme was based on job standards, known as competencies, set down by the Management Charter Initiative. The benefits that programme participants derived included better personal organisation and improved confidence in their management role. The negative aspects of the programme included the unclear nature of the language used.
