Drowning in debt
Article Abstract:
Australian personal debt is escalating, largely because of low inflation, low interest rates, and personal borrowing. A record 26,000 bankruptcies were filed in 1998-99,and household debt has almost trebled in two decades to reach an average of 90% of annual after-tax income. Household savings are below 1%. Ian Macfarlane, governor of The Reserve Bank of Australia, sees no immediate concern, but Peter Brain believes it is the duty of the Reserve Bank to curb the excesses of the community. With a lack of household savings, the economy is vulnerable to further debt.
