DuPont strikes study deal

DuPont Co. of Wilmington, DE, signed a deal with Hayward, CA-based Lynx Therapeutics Inc. to create new genetic advances that will enhance crop protection products. Under the $22-million research collaboration agreement, DuPont will get exclusive access to Lynx's technologies to research the advancement of a variety of crops, including soybeans, corn, wheat and rice. The study will focus on advancement techniques on gene discovery, genetic mapping and breeding programs. DuPont and Lynx officials anticipate the deal to be worth as much as $600 million within the next five years.

Zeneca to focus on drugs
Article Abstract:
Zeneca Group Plc of London, UK, is selling its specialty-chemicals division as part of an effort to focus on drugs and agrochemicals. The proposed sale comes after a number of drug companies, including rival Novartis AG, have made a move to sell their respective chemicals unit to concentrate on drugs. The unit, which produces intermediate chemicals for drugs, dyes, and colors for biocides, leather chemicals printing and resins, posted $1.5 billion in sales in 1997. In New Castle County, DE, the unit employs 230 people who work chiefly in Brandywine Hundred and New Castle.
