Election turmoil deepens

Nigerian military ruler Gen Ibrahim Babangida announced new elections would be held Aug 14, 1993. Babangida had been criticized for annulling the Jun 1993 election in which Social Democratic Party candidate Moshood Abiola won. Protests against the cancelled elections were held Jul 5-6, 1993.

Babangida reschedules vote
Article Abstract:
Nigeria's military leader Babangida announced Jun 26, 1993 that new elections would be held to choose a president. Babangida had invalidated the results of a previous election because of allegations of widespread vote buying. The Social Democratic Party protested Babangida's actions.
