Embattled Castle & Cook
Article Abstract:
Charles Hurwitz believes Castle & Cook is an under- valued company. He and his interests are trying to increase their share of stock in the company for possible takeover. The Hawaiian-based company is trying to fend off the attempt. Hurwitz claims he has no intention in controlling the company, and management thinks that he wants to pay a premium for his shares. Though Castle & Cook have had deficits in 1983, the company owns valuable property in Hawaii and California. The food processing and fresh food business could generate $60 million in cash in 1984. Some money managers believe Castle & Cook earnings could reach $2.80 a share by 1986. Hurwitz would like to see a return on his money well before 1986.

AT&T: Buy or Sell?
Article Abstract:
Owners of American Telephone & Telegraph Co. (AT&T) learned during the week of March 19, 1984 to March 23, 1984 why holding onto their shares would be risky. There currently is talk about cutting the dividend to the stock. The access charge issue is a threat to the company right now. The company also believes its profits will be lower in fiscal 1984. Many of the analysts who have turned bearish on the stock fear that politics will influence the stock's future more than economics.
