Equipment at Work: Switchboard Increases Staff Effectiveness

Article Abstract:

The aging communications system at WD and HO Wills in Sidney has been replaced by the STC telephone and paging system. The new system combines a Unimat 4060 PABX switchboard, Unimat software, and Teletracer paging system. The old system had three external switchboards and two internal systems and required separate phones for external communication. The new system provides metered phones that are programmed for calls ranging from internal only to International Subscriber Dialing. A picture of the Unimat switchboard is included.

The key to productivity is the motivation of personnel; and motivation can depend on the attitude of the manager toward the work and the employee. Among the characteristics of a good manager are concern and positive support for the employee. The manager motivates by setting realistic challenges, with just enough stress to avoid laxity. The employee is actively involved in projects, especially those instigating change. The effective manager gives the worker critical feedback and commendation for good performance.

Equipment at work: Hospital Security Ensured

Article Abstract:

FFE Aldridge Pty Ltd has installed the Schlage card key security system at Prince Alfred Hospital in Sidney. A sensor in the wall automatically opens the door when an authorized card is placed on the door. The system is controlled by a computer programmable to accomodate changes in personnel or lost cards. FFE also has installed Patient Care System, a computerized communications system operating digital display pagers used by the nursing staff. A photograph of Patient Care communications equipment is included.
