Ericsson agrees to acquire subsidiary of Newbridge Networks for $285 million

Advanced Computer Communication, a unit of data networking company Newbridge Networks, will be acquired by Telefon AB LM Ericsson for $285 million. Industry analysts have said that Ericsson's decision to move into Internet technology through its latest acquisition is part of a larger strategy that will include the acquisition of a number of smaller Internet technology companies. Ericsson, which does not have the in-house research capabilities for new Internet and data networking technologies, may also soon seek a major acquisition or merger.

Tellabs and Ciena call off merger as both stocks fall
Article Abstract:
Tellabs Inc.'s proposed acquisition of Ciena Corp. was cancelled due to fears that Ciena's poor prospects would destroy the merger of the two companies. Ciena's stock value fell by 17% as a result of the announcement. The company's stock value had fallen by 77% since the deal was announced in June 1998. Tellabs' own shares also fell 16% as it forecasted lower estimates.
