Postal Service, DHL to form an alliance
Article Abstract:
The U.S. Postal Service has signed an agreement with privately-held DHL Worldwide Express Inc. to make 2-day service a possibility for USPS to 18 European countries from 11 U.S. cities. Monetary terms of the deal were not disclosed. USPS plans to charge $23 for a 1/2-lb. item under the new plan. Currently USPS takes 3-7 days to deliver express international and it offers no tracking. It is also losing market share for those same reasons. FedEx and UPS have a problem with the USPS using its monopoly position in 1st class mail to also gain access to compete with private business.

Online shopping lifts delivery concerns' volume
Article Abstract:
About 2 million households did holiday gifting online in 1997, and that figure was up to about 8.5 million in 1998, way above expectations. USPS, FedEx and UPS all kept up by using a lot of overtime workers; USPS even made some deliveries on 12/25. FedEx and UPS continue to upgrade their technologies in order to compete. Both companies would prefer the business-to-business deliveries over the far-flung home deliveries as internet shopping increases.
