Exact solution of the Two-Dimensional Finite Bin Packing Problem
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to describe an exact solution for the Two-Dimensional Finite Bin Backing Problem represented by a set of rectangular pieces to be cut from an unlimited number of standardized stock pieces. Lower bounds that considered piece dimensions were utilized in the study. They were supported by corollaries and theorems for validation and proofs. They were then embedded into a branch-and-bound algorithm that was characterized by a nested branching scheme. The optimal solution assumed that all the input data were positive integers without loss of generality. Results showed that the combination of lower bounds within an enumerative algorithm led to the exact solution of the problem involving up to 120 pieces.

State-level efforts to transfer manufacturing technology: a survey of programs and practices
Article Abstract:
Fifteen state-sponsored technology transfer programs were studied to determine their effectiveness. All the technology programs were associated with universities, commonly with engineering schools at land-grant public universities. All program recipients were private manufacturing entities. Programs typically were one of three kinds: broker, active, or passive. Program development and operation issues centered on conflicts with the academic context, trouble in keeping current technically, and with staff retention difficulties.
