Non-profit Australian Geographic Society, conceived in 1987 to fund scientific research, and publisher of the successful periodical Australian Geographic, plans to diversify its distribution of scientific information. As of August 2000 it will publish a second magazine, Newton, developed from the Japanese publication of the same name; branching from this decision will be retail stores with science-related products, television documentaries and web sites.

Australians ought to use their credit cards liberally as the millennium approaches just in case computer systems do indeed malfunction when the Year 2000 arrives and all transactions records are lost. This approach is not a scheme to avoid paying obligations to creditors, but rather a slight hope that the Year 2000 change might provide some benefit.
