Fill it up, with RAM; cars get more megs under the hood
Article Abstract:
Automotive computers handle a range of assignments in today's cars, well beyond their primary role of cleaning up exhaust emissions. Car manufacturers are choosing to present these increasingly sophisticated networks with a practical emphasis. Microprocessors help engine management computers improve driving control by organizing the transmission, brakes, traction and stability control systems. Stability control systems in BMW, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus no longer force their drivers to keep control during spinouts by turning in the direction of the skid. The computer also can gather information on a driver's habits and order the engine computer to adjust the speed when it senses understeering or oversteering. Other key computerized driving functions include air bags and seat belts during a collision. A GPS system, cellular telephone and microprocessors can enable authorities to trace a stolen car and perhaps hear conversations inside the vehicle.

Industry surveys: autos & auto parts
Article Abstract:
News on the international automobile industry has been dominated by the merger of Daimler-Benz AG and Chrysler Corp and the acquisition of Volvo AB's car business by Ford Motor Co. Industry sources said the merger trend in the industry may have peaked and that automakers may instead focus on joint ventures and alliances. Automakers will continue to invest in Asia despite the region's economic difficulties. They are expected to fare poorly in South America because of the region's economic downturn. Sales of automotive parts are expected to suffer because new cars cannot be fiddled with.

Getting above your station (wagon)
Article Abstract:
Station wagons are being redesigned and marketed to be more sporty and desirable. Many include rugged, off-road features such as all-wheel drive and turbo-charged engines. More luxurious vehicles are being created for buyers who are conscious of image. Volvo, BMW, and Jaguar are among the companies with new styles of station wagons planned. The European market may prove difficult for these products, as four-wheel-drive is not as popular there.
